QWE sign off: how to get your QWE signed off

QWE sign off is the everyday name for what the SRA calls confirming qualifying work experience. The COLP or a solicitor where you worked signs it off; only if there is neither can an outside solicitor. You record each completed period in mySRA, naming your confirmer and their SRA number, and they confirm it in their own account.

Published by FQPS Academy, which also offers QWE confirmation by a solicitor where there is no COLP and no solicitor where you worked. Every rule below links to the SRA page it comes from.

What does QWE sign off mean for the SQE?

On the SQE route to qualifying as a solicitor of England and Wales, each period of qualifying work experience must be confirmed by a solicitor or COLP before it counts. Candidates and firms call that QWE sign off; the SRA’s rules call it confirming.

In one line

You record a finished period in mySRA, your solicitor or COLP confirms it in their own account, and the SRA emails you the outcome.

What candidates and firms say. The SRA’s Q&A uses it too: QWE not signed off by a solicitor does not count.

Confirm

Who signs off your QWE?

Regulation 2.2 sets the order for each organisation: its COLP or a solicitor working there, and a solicitor outside it only if there is neither. The full rule, with the SRA’s sources, is in our guide Who can confirm QWE?

How to prepare for QWE sign off

The SRA suggests three habits from the start of a placement, so your confirmer knows your work when you ask.

1

Agree who signs off, at the start

Know from the outset which solicitor or COLP will confirm your QWE, with their position and SRA number. If that changes, your organisation should tell you who replaces them.

2

Keep a record as you go

Use a training diary, a portfolio or the SRA’s training template. The template is optional, and you do not submit it to the SRA.

3

Talk to your confirmer regularly

Use one-to-ones or appraisals, so that you both agree how your records show the competences.

For a ready-made record with a worked example for each competence, use our QWE record template, or download the SRA’s own training template.

What to have ready before you open mySRA

  • The organisation’s name and branch.
  • The type of experience: paid, apprentice, placement or volunteer.
  • Your start and end dates, with the end date in the past.
  • Your work pattern, full or part time, and the total months and weeks.
  • Your confirmer’s name and SRA number.

How to confirm QWE in mySRA, step by step

You record the period in mySRA, the SRA’s online account, and your confirmer confirms it in theirs. These are the SRA’s steps, in order.

1

Tell your confirmer first

The SRA contacts your solicitor or COLP once you submit, so let them know it is coming.

2

Start the application

In mySRA, select ‘Start new applications’ and choose ‘Notify us of your qualifying work experience’. A draft is saved in ‘My profile’, under ‘Applications and documents’.

3

Confirm the requirements and the organisation

Tick the boxes to confirm you understand the SRA’s requirements, then give the organisation and branch.

4

Say what type of experience it was

Paid work, an apprenticeship, a placement or volunteering.

5

Enter the dates and your work pattern

Start and end dates, full or part time, and the total months and weeks. The end date must be in the past and cannot be left blank. Apprentices can use any two-year period of their apprenticeship.

6

Name your confirmer

Give their name and SRA number. The SRA cannot accept a barrister or any other lawyer unless they are also a solicitor or COLP it regulates.

7

Your confirmer signs it off

The SRA emails them a link. They log in to their own mySRA account, where a table shows the periods to confirm; if the email does not arrive, the request is under ‘Actions’.

8

You get the outcome

The SRA emails you to say whether your QWE was approved or rejected.

How does a solicitor confirm QWE, and what do they check?

The person signing off confirms three facts about the period, and can tell you what evidence they need to see.

What they confirm

  1. How long the work experience lasted.
  2. That it gave you the opportunity to develop some or all of the competences for solicitors, at least two of them.
  3. That nothing arose that raises a question about your character and suitability to be admitted or, if something did, the details of it.

How they can check it

  • Your training template, diary, learning and development record or portfolio, and whether it evidences the experience you claim.
  • Your dates and role, and any character and suitability issues, with the organisation’s HR team.
  • Feedback from the people who supervised your work.
  • Their own supervision of your work, although the SRA says this is not a requirement.

Confirming QWE is not a judgement on whether you are competent, how well you were trained or how good your work was. The SQE assessments test competence, and the SRA checks suitability when you apply for admission.

An outside solicitor must also have direct experience of your work, review your work for the period, such as your training diary or portfolio, and get feedback from your supervisors before confirming.

When should you get your QWE signed off?

Our advice

Get each period signed off soon after it ends, while your supervisors and records are easy to reach. A confirmer can only sign off what they can still check.

Once a period has ended

You can only record a complete period: the end date cannot be in the future or left blank.

If you are still in the role

Use an end date that has passed. After more than two years in a role, the SRA suggests agreeing the best date range with your confirmer.

By the time you apply for admission

You only need the full two years registered by then, and QWE can come before, during or after the SQE.

How long does QWE sign off take?

Nothing is confirmed until your confirmer acts on the SRA’s request in their own mySRA account, so it depends partly on them. Once they confirm, the SRA emails you whether it was approved or rejected, and it says it will let you know it has registered your QWE within 30 days.

How far back can you get QWE signed off?

There is no limit on how far back you can claim QWE, as long as it counts as QWE. Ask your previous employer who there could confirm it.

The SRA expects confirmers to take reasonable steps on a past period, such as checking with HR or your old supervisor, but recognises it may be legitimate for them not to confirm, for example when no records were kept, or the claim goes back beyond the organisation’s data retention period, or nobody from that time who can verify the experience still works there.

Part-time QWE and QWE from more than one organisation

Part-time work counts, and so can a mix of roles, such as a law clinic placement during your degree and then a paralegal job, as long as each meets the QWE requirements.

Two years in total

At least two years full time, or the equivalent part time. The SRA does not define full time and expects a common-sense view, so agree with your confirmer how your hours count.

Up to four organisations

Your two years can come from no more than four organisations, and each one is confirmed separately.

No minimum per placement

The SRA’s guidance for confirmers says there is no minimum or maximum prescribed length for each placement.

Who signs off can differ

It depends on who works in each organisation: its COLP or a solicitor there, or an outside solicitor where there is neither.

Sources: SRA Authorisation of Individuals Regulations, regulation 2; SRA: Qualifying work experience questions and answers (updated 3 October 2023); SRA guidance: Solicitors and COLPs confirming qualifying work experience (updated 29 September 2021); SRA: Qualifying work experience for candidates (updated 26 January 2024)

What to do if your QWE sign off stalls

The SRA expects solicitors to confirm QWE fairly, and not to refuse because they do not want to employ you as a solicitor once you qualify.

They refuse

Ask why, show how you met the competences, share the SRA’s guidance for confirmers and ask whether another solicitor or the COLP there can confirm. If they still refuse after these steps, contact the SRA’s Professional Ethics team. The SRA does not mediate, but it can remind solicitors of their obligations.

Your supervising solicitor has left

A solicitor who supervised you can still confirm, as long as they reviewed your work for the period they confirm and, for any work after they left, got feedback from the person now supervising you. If your confirmer retires or comes off the roll, your organisation should nominate someone else where possible.

Exceptional circumstances

If you finished your QWE but could not get it signed off by your organisation because of exceptional circumstances, for example because you worked for a sole practitioner who is no longer a solicitor, you can contact the SRA.

An outside solicitor is not a way round a refusal: where your organisation has a COLP or a solicitor, the sign-off stays with them. Every case, step by step, is in our guide Employer won’t sign off your QWE?

Sources: SRA: Dealing with a refusal to confirm qualifying work experience (updated 19 February 2025); SRA: Qualifying work experience questions and answers (updated 3 October 2023); SRA guidance: Solicitors and COLPs confirming qualifying work experience (updated 29 September 2021); SRA: Getting the best out of your qualifying work experience (updated 19 February 2025)

No COLP or solicitor where you did your QWE?

Then regulation 2.2(c) lets a solicitor of England and Wales outside the organisation confirm your QWE, if they have direct experience of your work, have reviewed your work for the period and have received feedback from the people who supervised you. Our QWE confirmation by a solicitor is for that case.

1

A designated solicitor

One of our solicitors talks your experience through with you on a guidance call first, and you get a full refund if they find you are not ready.

2

What regulation 2.2(c) requires

Regulation 2.2 asks an outside solicitor to have direct experience of your work, review your work for the period and get feedback from your supervisors. Your solicitor reviews your work and speaks to your supervisor before deciding. You get unlimited support throughout.

3

Sign-off in mySRA

If satisfied, they confirm in their own mySRA account. In our experience, the SRA then emails you the outcome often within 24 hours of the solicitor confirming. From £275.

If the organisation where you worked has a COLP or a solicitor, they sign off your QWE and we cannot. If you are not sure which applies, book a free 30-minute call and we will tell you.

QWE sign off: common questions

What does QWE sign off mean?

It is the everyday name for having your QWE confirmed by a COLP or solicitor under regulation 2.2. The SRA’s own answer is that QWE not signed off by a solicitor does not count.

How do I get my QWE signed off in mySRA?

Select ‘Start new applications’ in mySRA, choose ‘Notify us of your qualifying work experience’ and name your confirmer with their SRA number. The SRA then asks them to confirm it.

Where does my confirmer find the request in mySRA?

The SRA emails them a link once you submit, and a table in their own mySRA account shows the periods to confirm. If the email does not arrive, the request is under ‘Actions’ when they log in to mySRA.

Is there a fee to record QWE with the SRA?

No. The SRA charges no fee for recording your QWE.

Can I get QWE signed off if I have been in the role for more than two years?

Yes. Record a completed period with an end date that has passed, and agree the best date range with your confirming solicitor, as the SRA suggests.

Do I need to pass the SQE before my QWE is signed off?

No. QWE can come before, during or after the SQE, and you only need the full two years registered by the time you apply for admission.

How do I record part-time QWE in mySRA?

Choose part time as your work pattern and give the total months and weeks. The SRA does not define full time, so agree with your confirmer how your hours count towards two years full time or equivalent.

Who signs off my QWE if my organisation has no COLP or solicitor?

A solicitor of England and Wales outside the organisation, but only if it has no COLP and no solicitor. They must have direct experience of your work, review your work for the period and get feedback from your supervisor. FQPS QWE confirmation, from £275, is for this case.

No COLP and no solicitor where you did your QWE?

Where the organisation you worked for has no COLP and no solicitor, regulation 2.2(c) lets an outside solicitor with direct experience of your work confirm your QWE. One of our solicitors reviews your work, gets feedback from your supervisor and, if satisfied, confirms it in mySRA. From £275, with a full refund if the solicitor finds you are not ready.
