The FQPS method

One method. Every SQE2 answer.

You do not need to learn a different technique for each assessment. You need to learn one, and apply it in different ways. FQPS is FQPS Academy’s adaptation of the legal syllogism, the way judges reason, barristers argue and solicitors advise, organised into four steps.

  1. Facts

    What are the relevant facts?

    Minor premise
  2. Question

What is the legal question that needs to be answered?

    The issue to be decided
  3. Principles

What is the law that governs this question?

    Major premise
  4. Solution

What happens when you apply that law to these facts?

    Conclusion

Same thinking, different voice.

The legal analysis is identical in every case. What changes is how you express it. Pick an assessment to see how the book tells you to write each step for that reader.

Writing for A letter or email to a client

  1. Facts“You told me that…”
  2. QuestionNot stated explicitly; implied by the heading.
  3. PrinciplesExplained in plain English. No Act names, no section numbers, no dates.
  4. Solution“My advice is…” / “I recommend…”

See the difference

From reciting the law to answering the question.

A worked example from the book’s FQPS chapter. Flip between the two answers to the same client question.

The client’s questionMr and Mrs Okafor are purchasing a leasehold flat. The lease has 72 years remaining. They want to know if this is a problem.

  1. Facts

The lease has 72 years remaining. Mr and Mrs Okafor are purchasing the flat and intend to live in it.

  2. Question

Is a lease with 72 years remaining a problem for the buyers?

  3. Principles

Most mortgage lenders require a minimum unexpired lease term of 80 years at the time of purchase. A shorter lease can make it difficult to obtain mortgage finance and will reduce the property’s resale value over time. Buyers have a statutory right to extend the lease by 90 years once they have owned the flat for two years.

  4. Solution

The lease at 72 years is below the 80-year threshold. This is likely to cause difficulties with mortgage finance, both now and for any future buyer. I would recommend the Okafors budget for a lease extension and explore this within two years of purchase.

The difference is clear. The first version describes the law. The second version answers the question.

Questions about the book

What is the best SQE2 revision book?

It depends on what you need. If you want one book that covers all six SQE2 assessments with a single method for every answer, Written & Oral Skills for SQE2 does that. Some candidates add a book on one skill or one practice area. Our guide to the best SQE2 books compares the main options and what each one covers.

Is this SQE2 book enough on its own?

It explains each assessment, how it is marked and a method for answering it, with checklists and worked examples. You will still need timed practice: most candidates pair the book with SQE2 mock assessments.

Who writes and publishes the book?

FQPS Academy Ltd, an online SQE preparation provider for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination in England and Wales. FQPS Academy is not affiliated with or endorsed by the SRA or Kaplan.

Is it up to date for the 2026–27 assessments?

Yes. It covers the SRA’s 2026–27 changes and includes the 2027 SQE2 assessment windows. The SQE2 format itself is unchanged.

Does it cover both the written and the oral assessments?

All six: Legal Writing, Case and Matter Analysis, Legal Research, Legal Drafting, Client Interview and Attendance Note, and Advocacy.

Do I need an FQPS course to use it?

No. The book stands on its own. It also follows the same FQPS method our SQE2 course teaches, so the two work together if you are enrolled.

How quickly will it arrive?

The book is on pre-order. Copies are dispatched from 21 November 2026 on a tracked UK service, and UK delivery is free.
