Job Description

  • About the role

  • We have an exciting opportunity for a Paralegal, Legal Executive or newly qualified Solicitor to join our award-winning Travel team, based in our Southampton office. It will suit someone looking to develop their career into this genuinely interesting field of work.

Our team has a market-leading practice acting for insurers, airlines, tour operators, other travel businesses, policyholders and individuals in a wide range of complex travel, aviation and international disputes. The work is varied and frequently has an international dimension, providing an excellent opportunity for someone to develop their litigation skills.

The successful candidate will work on a broad range of matters, including:

    • claimant and defendant personal injury and liability disputes, including accidents occurring overseas and during travel that includes high profile and assisting on claims of the utmost severity
    • cross-border and international litigation, including questions of jurisdiction, applicable law and overseas evidence
    • UK261 and passenger rights claims, including claims arising from flight delays, cancellations, and other disputes
    • claims and disputes on behalf of insurers and their policyholders
    • aviation, travel and insurance disputes
    • working with foreign lawyers, experts and other professionals in jurisdictions around the world
    • complex and novel litigation involving developing areas of travel and international law, including cases capable of setting important precedents within this specialist field

The role offers exposure to work which is considerably broader than a traditional personal injury caseload. You will work alongside experienced lawyers within an award-winning team, on cases which can involve multiple jurisdictions, complex factual and legal issues and strategically important points of law.

The role will involve managing your own matters, where appropriate to your level of experience, as well as assisting senior lawyers with more substantial and complex litigation. You will have direct involvement in progressing claims, reviewing evidence, preparing correspondence and court documents, liaising with clients, insurers, witnesses, experts and overseas lawyers, and helping to drive matters forward efficiently.

We are a commercially focused, friendly and collaborative team which is committed to achieving the right results for our clients.

You do not need to have worked specifically in travel or aviation claims before. More important is a genuine interest in this specialist area and the ability to existing litigation skills to a varied and often complex caseload.

We support hybrid working, typically with 3 days flexible office attendance, according to business need.

    Skills / Experience Required
    The successful candidate should have:
    • previous litigation experience, ideally involving personal injury, insurance, aviation, travel or other civil disputes
    • excellent organisational and case-management skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines and priorities across a busy caseload
    • a good understanding of the litigation process and an ability to analyse evidence and identify the key legal and factual issues
    • strong written skills and attention to detail
    • the confidence to communicate effectively with clients, insurers, policyholders, lawyers, experts and other professionals both in the UK and overseas
    • a commercial and pragmatic approach to resolving disputes
    • the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team
    • enthusiasm for working on cross-border matters and engaging with lawyers and other professionals in different jurisdictions
    • the confidence and intellectual curiosity to become involved in novel and developing areas of law;
    • strong client-service skills
    • the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
    • ambition and an interest in developing a long-term career in this specialist practice

Experience of travel, aviation or international litigation would be advantageous but is not essential. A modern foreign language would also be useful given the international nature of the practice.

The interview process will start as soon as suitable candidates have been identified.
Blake Morgan strives to create and maintain a positive, non-discriminatory work environment. We will ensure that all applications for vacancies will be considered without discrimination against any person on the basis of race, colour, religion, disability, nationality, ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age or marital status.
