Family Law Paralegal

JKC Lawyers LLP is growing, and we need an experienced paralegal or legal assistant to join the family team in our Nuneaton office.

A lot of our family work is publically funded, and much of it is domestic abuse. You'll spend a lot of your time on non-molestation and occupation order applications, alongside private children cases and some public law work. You will be supervised by one of our Supervising Solicitors, but we'd expect you to run your own caseload day to day.

What you'll be doing

You will see clients from first contact through to final hearing. That means taking instructions, looking at whether the case has merit, working out if the client qualifies for legal aid and getting the funding application in on CCMS. Some of these are emergency applications that need to go in the same day.

After that you'll take witness statements, draft applications and letters, and get cases ready for court. You'll travel to court with counsel or your supervisor, and there may be a chance to do some advocacy yourself once you're ready.

About you

It will be helpful if you have worked in a law firm before, and you should want a career in legal aid family law. Experience of non-mols or legal aid applications would be a real advantage, but we will consider good candidates without it.

You will need to:

• write accurately and pay attention to detail
• be comfortable talking to clients who are frightened or upset
• keep on top of a busy caseload and hit deadlines, often at short notice
• cope with distressing material and still do the job well
• be willing to travel to courts across the area [driving licence and own car needed?]

A law degree is essential.

Pay: From £23,000.00 per year

• Nuneaton, Warwickshire: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (preferred)

• A-Level or equivalent (preferred)

Experience:

• Paralegal: 1 year (preferred)

Licence/Certification:

• Driving Licence (required)

• 50% (preferred)
