SQE2 self-practice becomes more useful when you decide what the session is testing. A guided attempt can teach you how to approach a file. A timed attempt can show what you produce independently. Both have a place, but their results mean different things. This guide helps you set up, attempt and review a session against the published assessment requirements.

Quick answer
  • Choose learning or independent timed practice before opening the task.
  • Use the timing and materials for the specific skill, not one generic SQE2 timer.
  • Use official Performance Indicators to review evidence in your work; a self-awarded grade is not an official result.

What should “exam conditions” mean in practice?

For a home session, define the conditions you can control: a suitable task, the correct time allowance, permitted task materials, a quiet workspace and a clear stop point. Switch off unrelated notifications and put personal notes and model answers away for an independent attempt. If you use guidance, label the attempt as guided rather than treating its outcome as unaided performance.

FQPS is an independent provider. Its practice environment is not the SRA assessment centre or the Pearson VUE platform. Use the official samples and platform link to become familiar with the official interface as well as practising the underlying skills. Matching a timer is only one part of useful preparation.

Standard SQE2 task timings to check before practice
SkillStandard timePractical setup
Case and matter analysis60 minutesRead the task and sources; produce the requested analysis.
Legal research60 minutesUse the supplied research materials and task instructions.
Legal writing30 minutesProduce the requested communication for its intended reader.
Legal drafting45 minutesPrepare the requested legal document or part of it.
Advocacy45 minutes preparation; 15 minutes deliveryKeep the preparation and delivery blocks distinct.
Client interview and note10 minutes preparation; 25 minutes interview; 25 minutes notePractise the complete sequence, including the attendance note/legal analysis.

These are standard published timings, not a replacement for your own approved reasonable adjustments. Check the official skill descriptions and your candidate instructions. For practice software, confirm the selected task timer before starting; learning exercises may deliberately use a different duration.

Use guided practice to learn the process

When a format is unfamiliar, an open example can help you see what a task requires. Read the instruction, identify the output and reader, and work through the available guidance. Then close it and explain the approach you would take. The useful outcome is a process you can attempt independently, not a document made by copying a model paragraph.

In FQPS written practice, guided work and timed modes serve different purposes. The available runner, content and plan determine the exact experience. Before an independent attempt, make sure learning aids are hidden and that you understand when the clock starts. Do not use a guided completion time as evidence of exam pacing.

Run one independent attempt cleanly

  1. Read the task title, skill and timing before starting. Select the intended mode.
  2. Prepare the workstation and task materials. Keep personal notes, exemplars and unrelated tabs closed.
  3. Start once. Work to the selected stop time without pausing to research your uncertainty elsewhere.
  4. Preserve what you submitted before opening an answer or feedback.
  5. Review the work separately so the attempt remains an honest record.

If a technical problem interrupts the attempt, record it. You can still learn from the work, but its timing may no longer be comparable with an uninterrupted session. Keep that distinction in your practice log instead of forcing every attempt into a single score chart.

Review the output, not your memory of the attempt

Use the relevant official Performance Indicators and sample discussion to look at what the work actually demonstrates. Find a passage that supports your assessment, or mark the absence of something required. “I knew that” is not the same as communicating it clearly in the submitted answer.

Separate law from execution. An incorrect legal conclusion needs a different remedy from a sound conclusion buried in an unclear structure. Choose one priority correction and one follow-up task. A detailed review with no next action can feel productive while leaving the same weakness in place.

A compact practice record

Skill and task · mode and materials used · allowed time and actual interruption record · strongest evidence · most important omission · next drill · date for a fresh attempt.

Know when to add another person

Written work can be reviewed against an exemplar and criteria, but self-marking has blind spots. For interviewing, a role-play partner can respond to your questions and reveal whether your sequence makes sense to another person. For advocacy, a listener can tell you where your submission loses its thread. Choose feedback that addresses the skill you are trying to improve.

Use simulated sessions to develop a repeatable routine, then verify it against the official resources rather than treating a provider label as a guarantee of identical examination conditions.

Frequently asked questions

Does FQPS reproduce the official SQE2 examination exactly?

FQPS is an independent practice platform. It supports preparation using tasks and timed modes, but it is not the SRA assessment centre or Pearson VUE. Use official platform practice for interface familiarisation.

How long is SQE2 legal writing?

The standard published legal writing time is 30 minutes. Check the selected exercise and any personal reasonable-adjustment arrangements.

Should I use model answers while practising?

Use them deliberately in guided learning. Keep them closed for an independent timed attempt, then compare the preserved submission during review.

Can a self-marked result tell me I will pass?

No. It is evidence for planning further practice, not an official grade or a prediction of your examination result.
