The Legal Services Directorate of Avon and Somerset Police is offering an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Solicitor to join their busy in-house legal team.

Our lawyers play a vital role in providing legal advice across the Constabulary on a wide range of legal issues.

The Legal Services team works across all levels of the Constabulary, from supporting senior officers in meeting the organisation’s key objectives, through to officers’ decision making on the ground.

The role:

As part of your 2-year fixed term contract, you will learn and develop in many interesting areas of Police law including:

Operational policing work advising on many of the civil injunctive orders open to the Constabulary (the main focus will be on safeguarding work including Domestic Violence Protection Orders, Stalking Protection Orders, Sexual Harm Prevention Orders, Slavery and Trafficking Risk Orders and orders relating to tackling Anti Social Behaviour). The work will also focus on other aspects of operational policing such as Proceeds of Crime Act applications, dangerous dogs matters, public order policing and firearms licensing. The work will largely deal with matters in the Magistrates’ Court, Crown Court and County Court.
  • Litigation work which will focus on civil claims, both Public and Employer liability, Judicial Reviews.
  • Employment and Misconduct, focusing on cases in the employment tribunal, providing advice on a wide variety of matters from grievances, policies, pensions, ill health retirement and potential claims under the Equality Act. Providing legal advice and procedural guidance on police misconduct matters.
  • Commercial work, including contracts and collaboration agreements.
  • Inquests and public inquiries.

About you:

You should have successfully completed your academic studies (qualifying Law degree; or other degree and Graduate Diploma in Law) and you must either currently be completing the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or have successfully completed the LPC. We cannot accept an application if you do not meet this criteria.

The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal, negotiating and influencing skills; demonstrate they can work effectively under pressure and to tight deadlines. They will be an enthusiastic, resilient and flexible individual with analytical, communication and organisational skills as well as being a strong team player.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

The role is based at Avon and Somerset Constabulary Portishead, Police Headquarters, Valley Road, Portishead- BS20 8QJ combined with working from other police locations, court and from home. Blended Working/ Hybrid Working

Avon and Somerset Police encourage flexible working where operationally possible.
This role has been identified as a blended role.
The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises. The successful applicant will have the option to discuss working arrangements with their line manager. All applicants must reside within the UK.
